Description of the Theory What is the theory of Positivism? There are two basic claims positivism makes: That all knowledge regarding matters of fact is based on the “positive” data of experience, and that beyond the realm of fact is that of pure logic and mathematics (Feigl, H., 2018). In simpler terms positivism states that whatever exists can be verified through experiments, observations and mathematical/ logical proof. Everything else is non-existent (Philosophy, 2018). Positivists are almost always realists as well, meaning they believe in objective truth (Philosophy, 2018). They deny cultural and other beliefs that may get in the way of science. They believe that everything that exists is placed into three categories, true, false, and meaningless. Something that is meaningless means it isn't clear enough to be tested by science or positivistic means (Philosophy, 2018). The purpose of positivism and its theory is to study society strictly by scientific experiments, and statistics, and in doing so reveal the true nature of how society
