From the 13 th to the 18 th century, Jains played a vital role in the Mughal court, especially during the 16 th and 17 th century. During this time, Jain monks frequently visited the Mughal Royal court. These Jain monks were mainly members of the Svetambara (white-clad) sect, Tapa Gaccha. While, Jain Digambaras (sky-clad) were not observed to be involved in the Mughal court. Members of the Tapa Gaccha had imperial connections with the Mughals. They were deeply involved in the Mughal court life in various ways. They served as great advisors to the royal court. However, they principally served as tutors to royal princes, companions to Mughal kings, and informants for Persian accounts of Sanskrit knowledge systems. They were seen to guide Mughal kings to take the right decisions politically and morally. Jain monks also used this opportunity to spread the principles of Jainism throughout the kingdom by positively influencing the powerful Mughal rulers and persuading them to increase tax cuts and to ban animal slaughter. As a result, their involvement in the Mughal royal court not only benefitted the Mughal rulers, but also the Jains. Even though the actions of Jain leaders were meant for good for the Mughal court and the kingdom, there were times when they were contentions between Mughal rulers and the Jain leaders. This was mainly because religious Jain beliefs conflicted with Muslim views. As a result, there were several instances during the history of Jain involvement in Mughal courtly life when Jain leaders had to face the wrath of Muslim kings.
