I think Posner had a few strong arguments. One example would be when he said that one of Bluebook’s purposes is invalid. This purpose would be so to spare the writer or editor from having to worry about the proper form of citations. This can be so complex with all the hours of studying, consulting, extrapolating from, and resolving contradictions in the Bluebook form that the writer or editor is not spared from thinking. Richard A. Posner, Goodbye to the Bluebook, 53 U.Chi.L.Rev. 1343, 1344 (1986). I feel Posner had a good argument there, I too have been a "victim" of having to make sure my Bluebook citations were correct several times when composing my papers, etc. I have had to go back at times and look up the proper way to cite a certain source in Bluebook format, which in many factors is very time-consuming. A second strong argument that Posner had was when he said, “It is desirable that one should be used consistently within an article or journal so that the reader if he sees ‘F. 2d’ and ‘Fed. 2d.” in the
