MEN 231 Solid Mechanics 2 Professor Young-Bin Park Types of Material Failure (Dowling 1.2) 1. Deformation failure: a change in the physical dimensions or shape of a component that is sufficient for its function to be lost or impaired 2. Fracture: cracking to the extent that a component is separated into two or more pieces Deformation 1. Time-independent (a) Elastic : recovered immediately upon unloading (b) Plastic : permanent deformation 2. Time-dependent (a) Creep : slow, continuous deformation that accumulates with time; important at high temperatures (e.g., sagging of tungsten light bulb filament, glass (window) in old houses, low melting point metals (e.g. lead)) (b) Viscoelastic : material shows both viscous (liquid-like) and elastic (solid-like) behavior; strain rate effect is important (e.g. silly putty) Fracture 1. Static loading : loading does not vary with time (a) Brittle : little or no plastic deformation (b) Ductile : significant plastic deformation (c) Environmental cracking : stress and chemical effects (e.g. corrosion)

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
