Midterm Review - Edmond Locard - “when a criminal comes in contact with anything, he can leave something behind to use as a clue” - Purpose of forensics - To use found evidence in order to find a suspect, and bring to court - Chain of custody is important b/c it’s needed in trial + anyone who has touched it should not contaminate/change the evidence - When Forensics Scientists are at a crime scene they must first: - put on gear to not contaminate the scene - take pictures - write notes - When Police are at a crime scene, they must first: - secure the area w/ police tape - find injured people - Physical evidence - anything they can establish a link between a crime scene and a victim - Why would a forensic scientist be called to court? To be an expert witness - 3 ways of dying that require an autopsy: - undetermined/unexplained - violent - suicide +unexpected - Ways scientist can determine time of death: - rigor mortis - algor mortis - livor mortis - bugs/larvae Packaging - Hair: plastic bag/vial - Bloody clothes: cardboard box/bag -
