Genetics of HYPP • Genetic cause: an incompletely dominant gene • Some heterozygous animals are asymptomatic, however • One base pair change: TTG instead of TTC • Leucine instead of phenylalanine is coded for resulting in changes in the sodium ion channel which affects muscle membranes • More sodium enters the muscle cells and more potassium leaves into the bloodstream.
