Chapter 8 Tectonics : Movement of the earths crust. Plate Tectonics : Movement of discrete segments of Earth’s crust in relation with one another. Theory of plate tectonics explains why volcanoes and mountains formed, the occurrence of earthquakes, and the age of the seafloor Explains the distribution of plants and animals, volcanoes, earthquakes, mid- ocean ridges, and the three basic kinds of faults Continental Drift : idea that continents move horizontally over earths surface. The first evidence came from the observation that the two sides of the atlantics fit together Before continental drift, geologist used the idea that giant felsic land bridges connected the continents to explain the existence of the same fossils on two different continents. They theorized that the giant land bridges subsided creating the ocean floor. Wegener came up with the idea that all the continents were once connected creating Pangaea.
