Historical Geology Lab Geological History of Texas During the Precambrian Texas began as a proto-continent. Proto-continents formed when the mafic crust would be positioned over a hot spot causing the felsic material, which has a lower melting point and is less dense, to rise above the more dense mafic materials creating the first island arcs. These island arcs would move toward each other creating the Green belts and the Grenville orogeny. These collisions would create the formation of Laurentia which includes Texas and the rest of North America. Like all orogenies of the present, the Grenville orogeny would begin to erode creating sediment. Through transportation this sediment would expand the size of the continent. During the Precambrian, some of Texas is under water. The Texas coast line stretches from Dallas to Del Rio. As in the Precambrian, most of Texas is covered by water through the early to middle Paleozoic. At this time it is under shallow, warm, tropical marine waters. Shallow tropical marine waters seem to be the niche or favorable ecosystem for marine life. Marine life is the building block for limestone, which is produced by the decay of marine organisms.
