Unformatted text preview: EMA 4161C P HYSICAL PROPERT IES OF POLYMERS HYDROGEL SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTER IZAT ION LABORATORY 1.0 PURPOSE To experimentally determine the average molecular weight between crosslinks, equilibrium water content and Young’s modulus of two different hydrogel formulations. 2.0 LAB PREPARAT ION 1. Read Section 9.12 The Flory-Rehner Equation in Introduction to Physical Polymer Science (Sperling, 2006). 2. Print out hydrogel formulas for 50wt% and 80wt% PEGDMA. 3. Print out spreadsheets for recording hydrogel data. 3.0 DEF I N I T IONS AND ACRONYMS 1. PEGDMA: Poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate 2. PDMSe: Polydimethylsiloxane elastomer 3. APS: Ammonium persulfate 4. AA: L-ascorbic acid 4.0 MATER IAL L IST 1. PEGDMA (M n ≈ 1000), Catalog # 15178, Polysciences, Inc. (Eppelheim, Germany) 2. Hexanes 3. AA 99+%, Catalog # 2556-4 Sigma-Aldrich (Milwaukee, WI) 4. APS Catalog # 24861-4 Sigma-Aldrich (Milwaukee, WI) 5. Deionized water 6. PDMSe gasket 7. Glass plates 8. Large (2”) binder clips 9. 3 small glass beakers 10. Stir plate and stir bar 11. 10mL glass pipettes 12. 15mL centrifuge tubes 13. Transfer pipette 14. Analytical Balance, Mettler Toledo or equivalent 15. Weigh paper 16. Centrifuge, Fisher Scientific Centrific Model 228 or equivalent 17. Stainless steel wire 18. Circular punch 19. 12 50mL centrifuge tubes with rack 20. Vacuum oven 5.0 HYDROGEL SYNTHESIS 1. Gather all materials. 2. For this lab we will divide into two groups. One group will make and characterize a PEGDMA hydrogel with 50wt% PEGDMA and the other group will make and characterize a PEGDMA hydrogel with 80wt% PEGDMA. 3.
