Unformatted text preview: EMA 4161C POLYMER PROCESSING THERMAL PROPERTIES LABORATORY PURPOSE: Receive training on the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and utilize DSC to measure the thermal response of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PETE). The thermal characteristics of a polymer including Tg, Tm, enthalpy of fusion, and crystallinity will be measured using the DSC. LAB. PREPARATION: Questions to ponder: 1. How does a DSC work and what can it measure these properties? 2. What thermal transitions might you expect to see in the DSC traces from the PETE samples? 3. Hypothesize about the crystallinity of the PETE samples taken from the different locations as it relates to the way the bottle was processed (review from the experiment 1), and the effect on thermal properties, i.e., the DSC traces. 4. Discuss anything else which may pertain to this lab. MATERIALS: Empty 2L clear soft drink PETE bottle Amorphous PETE Film Annealed PETE Film Aluminum pans and covers Liquid nitrogen EQUIPMENT: Differential Scanning Calorimeter-Seiko Model DSC220C Auto cooling controller/dewar Digital Scale Razor blade or scissors Thermal protective gloves (cryogenic) Safety glasses PROCEDURE: Three PETE samples (amorphous PETE film, annealed PETE film, and mid-section of PETE bottle) will be characterized using the DSC to measure degree of crystallinity, Tg, Tm, and enthalpy of fusion (...
