EMA 4666C POLYMER PROCESSING LABORATORY EXPERIMENT 4 - EXTRUSION PROCESS PURPOSE: To get a "hand on" experience on the extrusion process and learn how the extruder works. MATERIALS: HDPE in pellet form. EQUIPMENT: 1" screw KL-100 extruder, take-up equipment, stop watch, tape, balance, and gloves PROCEDURE: 1. Heat the barrel and die to at least the melt index of the materials and allow the barrel to "soak" at this temperature for at least ten minutes after the temperature reaches the desired level. 2. Turn on the extruder at the lowest possible speed. Never adjust the motor speed unless the motor is running. 3. Pour the material into the hopper (a few pellets at a time) until the material flows smoothly out of the die. 4. Fill the hopper to what ever level you wish once you satisfied that material is following properly from die. 5. Turn on the water or air to cool the feed section. 6. Turn on the water for the water cooled screw, if appropriate. 7. Measure the output of extruder at screw RPM 10, 20, and 30. Set the desired screw speed,
