EMA 4666C POLYMER PROCESSING LABORATORY EXPERIMENT 4 - EXTRUSION PROCESS PURPOSE: To get "hands on" experience on the extrusion process and learn how the extruder works. Also, to learn how processing parameters and additives affect the thermomechanical properties of thermoplastic polymers. MATERIALS: 3 grades of Polypropylene in pelletized form- 1. Stabilized PP, MFI=2.0 2. Stabilized PP, MFI=18.0 3. Unstabilized PP, MFI=2.0 EQUIPMENT: 1" screw KL-100 extruder, take-up equipment, stop watch, tape, balance, and gloves PROCEDURE: 1. Heat the barrel and die recommended temperatures and allow the barrel to "soak" at this temperature for at least ten minutes after the temperature reaches the desired level. 2. Turn on the extruder at the lowest possible speed. Never adjust the motor speed unless the motor is running. 3. Pour the material into the hopper (a few pellets at a time) until the material flows smoothly out of the die. 4. Fill the hopper to what ever level you wish once you are satisfied that material is following
