EMA 4666C POLYMER PROCESSING LABORATORY PLASTICS EXTRUSION PURPOSE: To get "hands on" experience on the extrusion process and learn how the extruder works. Also, to learn how processing parameters and additives affect the thermomechanical properties of thermoplastic polymers. MATERIALS: Three grades of Phillips 66 injection molding controlled rheology polypropylene with antistatic and nucleating agents in pelletized form: 1. HLN-120-01 (MFI: 12g/10min @ 230°C/2.16 Kg) 2. HLN-200 (MFI: 20g/10min @ 230°C/2.16 Kg) 3. HLN-350 (MFI: 35g/10min @ 230°C/2.16 Kg) EQUIPMENT: 1" screw KL-100 extruder, take-up equipment, stop-watch, balance, safety glasses, and heat resistant gloves PROCEDURE: 1. Heat the barrel and die at recommended temperatures (Table 1). Allow the barrel to "soak" at this temperature for at least ten minutes. Table 1. Suggested temperature profile for the extruder.
