Religion Northern Humanism Desiderius Erasmus – thought that the church and society were very corrupt Praise of Folly and Sharp Tongue had counter reformation Martin Luther – 95 theses, which are 95 things he believes, are true. A believer in change. Didn’t believe that you could pay your way into heaven o Indulgences – (get out of jail free charge) you pay the church money and they give you a ‘ticket to heaven’. Martin Luther disagreed with this o Salvation by works – if you pay for a cathedral then you get into heaven. Martin Luther did not agree with this as well. o Papal Worldliness – The Pope is falliable and equal o Diet of Worms – Seminary – a training center for monks Inquisition – a body of secret service priests. Finding jews, muslims that are in Christian camps. A body of hitman for the church Wars of Religion – (1530-1648) – Peace of ausburg (1555) “Cuius regio, eius religio” = “he who controls the realm, controls the religion” Henri Naravrre – married to Henri III’s sister in 1572. Everyone assassinates everyone other than Navarre. Converts and becomes Henri IV and is now king of France
