Mike Martin Creative Writing Gallagher 2010 Reflection on portfolio The reason behind what I wrote, I believe, should be mentioned first . I don’t actually like to write so much, I prefer to read a good story that takes me in and makes me think, and experience a new world beyond my own; an escape if you will . However, I had one more reason in taking this and a few of my other classes this semester . I have been studying broad for the past year, and my ability to use English as freely and effectively as I used to be able to had greatly diminished while abroad, having not used English for a year for more than the occasional facebook posting . Anyways, that aside, I would like to talk about a few of my strengths first, since there are only a few to mention . My greatest strength as I see it, is having read many books in English, and also a second language, giving me insight to how two different languages would approach the same theme and topic, and the word usage that would be chosen by both . This may not seem like a strong point at first, but I can recognize words and create many ties to similar words in both languages, allowing me to visualize in different ways than some people might . This comes through when I write as well, because I will strive to explain a concept, or feeling, even the state of some action from one language that simply does not exist in the other language .

This pushes me to think of more ways to connect with whomever it would be reading my writing . Perhaps at the same time though, this seems to have become a weakness to me . Even recently writing the end of a story for this portfolio, I fee that things I want to express often do not get easily put into English, and it frustrates me to no end at times . Perhaps he easiest part of this portfolio for me was the writing of poetry, because I enjoy poetry, how the meaning can change dramatically from one person’s interpretation to the next . (Quite literally) For example, a poem in one language, complete with the connotations of feeling in that language, could mean next to nothing when it is translated due to the power of the words being different . My other weaknesses include appropriate names for works . After that, come creating a conclusion seems to me like catching music in a wool hat . Perhaps my favorite work in this portfolio would be either Whispers in the dark, or “Life partner” . It was difficult to express in English what I wished to, and though I tried my best, I do not know that I am completely satisfied with the result . Hopefully I will be ableto do so in the future, which is my goal . This class has also helped me be more creative in writing, just starting for example, even if I don’t know what I want to write in the least . As long as I just start, I can at least to do something .
