Name Class Date The MU of the Shoe Objectives: 1. To draw a force diagram that shows all the forces acting on the object as used in the activity. 2. To determine and compare the coefficient of friction of different kinds of shoes. Materials: 4 kinds of shoes/sandals 1 kg mass spring scale weighing scale Procedure: 1. Record the type, brand or style of shoe. 2. Place a 1-kg mass inside the shoes. Using the electronic weighing scale, determine the mass of the shoe with the added weight. 3. Place the shoe on a horizontal surface. Attach the spring scale to the shoe. 4. Using the spring scale, pull the shoe across the surface at a constant velocity. Make sure that the spring scale is parallel to the horizontal surface as you pull the shoe. Read the amount of force indicated in the scale. Record the spring scale reading as the constant pulling force is acting on the shoe. The constant pulling force in this situation is equal to the frictional force.
