Abstract (4) The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the interaction of a magnetic dipole moment with an external magnetic field and find the moment of a permanent magnet statically by balancing the gravitational torque with magnetic torque and finally find the magnetic moment dynamically by measuring the period of oscillation caused by a restoring magnetic torque. First we were to measure and record the mass, thickness, length and the diameter of the objects that are being used in the experiment. Next you are to place the plastic weight on the tube as far out as it will go and measure this distance with the calipers as z (cm) and I (amps) and then record theses values. Next you are to make sure the two VOLTAGE knobs of the Leader power supply are full clockwise (CW) and the current knobs are full counterclockwise (CCW). Afterwards you are to place the ball in the air bearing. Note that when you turn on the air, there has to be air flow around the seated part of the ball so it can move freely. Next the air is to be turned on and adjust the magnet current from the Leader power supply so that the rod is horizontal (parallel to the table top). After this is found the current in the table is to be recorded along with the value for z. Next you are to set and record the distance z in cm for each of the following values: 9.00, 8.00, 7.00, 6.00, 5.00, 4.00, 3.00, 2.00, 1.00, and 0.00. Afterward the tube is to be removed from the object while the ball in the air bearing, turn on the air and adjust the magnet current to 4.00A. Afterward measure the time for 25 complete oscillations which is the movement is back and forth and record the
