Son of Sam: David Berkowitz CHILDHOOD He was born Richard David Malco on June 1, 1953, but later his name was change to David Richard Berkowitz by his adopted parents Nathan and Pearl Berkowitz. The family lived in a middle-class home in the Bronx. The couple loved their son, yet Berkowitz grew up feeling rejected and scorned because of being adopted. As a child he was larger than most of the kids his age and not attractive. His parents were not social people and David had a reputation for being a loner. Also he was plagued with guilt and anger because he believed that his natural mother had died while giving birth to him. In school he was above-average intelligence, but he lost interest in learning at an early age and began an infatuation with petty larceny, pyromania, and had a reputation of being a bully (Gilks, 2007). When his mother Pearl died in 1967 he became severely depressed and in then his father remarried and moved, leaving David behind at the age of 18. He then joined the army in 1971 as a skill marksman for three years and then he was honorably discharged in 1974(Perry, 2002).
