A Gantt Chart is an useful tool in project management . The purpose of the Gantt chart is to graphically display the scheduling of tasks required to complete a project. Henry Lawerence Gantt, a management consultant and industry advisor, developed the Gantt chart to show scheduled and actual progess of projects. The Hoover Dam construction project is an example of a project that utilized a Gantt chart. The horizontal axis on the Gantt chart represents the total time span of the project. The time span can be broken down into increments such as days, weeks, and months. The tasks that make up the project is represented on the vertical axis. Horizontal bars for each task create a graph. One can show important checkpointsor goals for the project. An additional column in the chart labeled resources shows who is responsible for the task. The Gantt chart uses symbols such as downward arrow which represents dependencies. Some activities in a project may be dependent on other activities being completed first.
