Brittany Coffman Eng 235 TH 2:30-3:45 Professor Evans 16 November 2010 Characterize Willy Loman as protagonist in Death of a Salesman. Note at least three (3) aspects of his personality and discuss these traits as they relate to the development of the plot. Discuss the play as a modern tragedy. A tragedy demonstrates a series of actions that lead to the downfall of the tragic hero. In a tragedy the protagonist suffers greatly and his actions affect the individuals around him. The actions and personality of the tragic hero are forces that lead to an inevitable disastrous conclusion. In Arthur Miller’s play “Death of a Salesman”, the protagonist Willy Loman demonstrates three strong aspects of his personality which include determined, disillusioned, and prideful. The protagonist Willy Loman pursues the American Dream. The American Dream is a reoccurring theme in American Literature.
