Terms – Our Mental Toolbox of Art History We need a language to help us talk about, analyze, and understand works of art The arts are historically divided into three basic types or categories: 1) Fine art – painting and sculpture 2) Applied art or “decorative art” – art works that are useful or employed for some decorative purpose. Examples: jewelry, leatherwork, mural painting, textiles, metalwork/enameling, furniture design 3) Architecture – the art of building, commonly divided into “high style” architecture (monumental buildings and formal buildings with artistic aspirations) and “vernacular” or “low style” buildings (everyday structures such as gas stations, suburban tract houses or farm houses, etc.
