ART 1012 Art History Survey II Fall 2009 Study Aid 12: Modern Architecture and Design I In a major development for 20 th -century modern architecture, Walter Gropius founds the “State Bauhaus in Weimar,” a fusion of the former Weimar School of Applied Arts and the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts. The Bauhaus evolves in 3 distinct phases under 3 different directors in 3 different cities: 1 st phase is 1919-1925, in Weimar, Germany, directed by Walter Gropius. The “Bauhaus” name plays off medieval concept of the “Bauhütte,” or guild of highly organized craftsmen-builders who worked on cathedrals in the middle ages.
