Unformatted text preview: MAC 2233 STUDENT GUIDE Spring 2011 CONTENTS: Course Policies Syllabus Calendar Lecture Outline Sample Exams COURSE POLICIES and SYLLABUS COURSE CONTENT. MAC 2233 is the first in a two semester sequence MAC 2233– MAC 2234 surveying basic calculus. The course content of MAC 2233 is given on a day by day basis in the lecture outline in this booklet. PREREQUISITES. MAC 2233 assumes that you have essential algebra skills necessary to succeed in calculus. The appropriate prerequisites for the course can be found on the Math Department web page, http://www.math.ufl.edu/courses/advising/ or the Academic Advising Center web page, http://www.advising.ufl.edu/ . To help determine your prepa- ration for MAC 2233, you should have completed the Mathematics Placement Exam (ALEKS) or equivalent prior to registering for this course. If not, information about ALEKS is available through the ISIS homepage https://www.isis.ufl.edu/aleksinfo.html . If you have questions, check with the main math office in Little 358 or the course coordinator, Dr. Harrington, in Little 413. Note the quote from the ALEKS info website: “The Depart- ment of Mathematics encourages you to take the assessment even if you have met one of the prerequisites for MAC 2233 or MAC 2311. Quite often, your algebra and trigonometry skills may need review and your placement assessment can provide information and specific areas for additional study.” The complete list of appropriate prerequisites for MAC 2233 can be found on the Math Department web page, www.math.ufl.edu/courses/advising/ ; link to Precalculus and Calculus options. You can also check with an advisor in your college, the MAC 2233 course coordinator, or in the main math office (Little 358) to be sure that you are eligible to register. The text will provide a Precalculus review, and we highly recommend that anyone having difficulty with that review or the first few lectures of MAC 2233 should first take MAC 1140, a three credit review of College Algebra. You may switch courses on ISIS during the drop-add period. In an agreement with the registrar’s office, you have one additional week to drop back to MAC 1140. After the drop-add period, the paperwork to move back to MAC 1140 must be completed through the math department. The deadline is TUESDAY, JANUARY 18th by 4 PM See the course coordinator, Dr. Harrington, in Little 413, if you feel that you may need to move back to one of these courses.
