Registers n General purpose registers. q There are several 64 bits registers (RAX, RBX, RCX, RDX, RBP, RDI, RSI, RSP, R8, R9, R10, R11, R12, R13, R14, and R15). q They are used to hold operands for logical and arithmetic operations and to hold addresses. q Access may be done in 8, 16, 32, or 64 bits.

Registers n There is no direct access to the upper 16 bits of the 32 bits registers or the upper 32 bits of the 64 bit registers. n Data can be accessed in registers R8 – R15 in 64, 32, 16, and 8 bits, with the same constraints given above. Also bits 8 through 15 are not directly addressable.

Registers n Some instructions incorporate dedicated registers in their operations which allows for decreased code size, but it also restricts the use of the register set.
