It might be easy to blame Susan for the breakdown of this marriage or to find Matthew the one at fault, but as in any relationship, there are two. A. Analyze and describe Matthew's listening skills and Susan's way of expressing herself (as well as how she responds to his words). You may use other examples from the story as well as this scene to make your points. Give specific references to the story in your response. I think Susan tried hard to tell Matthew the truth. Yet, she was bound by “her choice” to not express her true feelings because she based her life on “ everything right, appropriate, and what everyone would wish for, if they could choose.” Susan knew how she felt, but she didn’t tell Matthew. When he asks her if she needs a holiday, she knows he meant alone, but responded, “but not without you surely?” She then internalizes that she wants to tell him she wants to go without them but can’t, further, she isn’t sure what she wants to tell him.
