HIPAA CONFIDENTIALITY ON HIV AND AIDS 2 HIPAA Confidentiality on HIV and AIDS Let’s have an overview of what HIV and AIDS really is. AIDS or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome is society most deadly disease today. AIDS starts as HIV or the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. A single-stranded RNA virus, HIV reverses RNA to DNA. The difference between the flu and HIV is you can not get rid HIV. It’s a mystery why the body is not able to fight off HIV. T- Cells or CD4, which the body needs to combat against disease and infection, HIV attacks and kills. HIV clones the body’s cells and kills them. The body’s ability to fight off the infection decreases as the cells are destroyed. HIV progresses into AIDS when the body can no longer fight the virus. A patient may live years without showing symptoms from HIV if the body and mind are kept healthy. An infected person may not show signs of the disease for ten years. Symptoms can be seen as early as two years in other patients. A factor’s that determines how long it takes to show symptoms is age. (A) Dry cough, (b) chronic diarrhea, (c) rapid weight loss, (d) memory loss, (e) recurring fever, (f) swollen lymph glands, (g) pneumonia, and (h) fatigue are HIV symptoms. A patient must test positive for the antibodies to two different HIV tests to be diagnosed “HIV positive”. The tests are called the enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and the western blot test. HIV is the first stage of the AIDS virus. Before it becomes a case of full blown AIDS a patient can be infected for a long time. The HIV stage of the disease and the AIDS stage of the disease are as follows: First stage: H- Human I- Immunodeficiency V- Virus:

Final stage: A- Acquired. I- Immuno D- Deficiency S- Syndrome AIDS is acquired after birth not inherited. The immune system contains the body’s disease fighting cells and organs. AIDS causes the body to become deficient and unable to function properly. The syndrome of AIDS is made up of many diseases and symptoms.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
