Jason Mallette 1/7/11 Astronomy Written Assignment #5 Astronomers have been studying the Sun for a long time and until recently have not been able to view the corona as they would like. The corona is only visible during an eclipse when the Sun is blocked by the moon, which only happens for a few minutes. Researchers have been trying to find a way to view the innermost corona. Until now only the outer part of the corona has been able to be viewed. A group of Smithsonian scientists have engineered an instrument that gives us extraordinary views of the innermost corona. These views occur twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The instrument is currently mounted on board NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. The Solar Dynamics Observatory, which houses the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly, is on a mission to study the sun. This mission is the foundation of a science program through NASA called Living with a Star. The goal of the mission is to establish an understanding the aspects of the Sun
