We use these schemes to show the addition of atomic orbitals that result in molecular orbitals. . a. Label all of the orbitals pictured in the diagram below as p x , p y , p z , σ , σ *, π , π * where an * indicates an anti-bonding molecular orbital. (In this diagram, we’re assuming the 1s and 2s orbitals are completely filled and can therefore be ignored). b.
