Summer 2009 Ethics and Values Syllabus Instructor: John Crawford Room: LA 113 Class Time: 8:45 AM – 10:25 Office: 121A LA Office Hours: By Appointment Phone Number: (801) 765-4860 (Please don’t call after 9:00 PM) Email Address: [email protected] Textbook: Being Good by Simon Blackburn Other readings as necessary Purpose Statement: The course is designed to encourage students to examine their systems for making moral decisions and to provide tools useful for this endeavor. This course is not designed to promote or denigrate any particular moral system, but rather to help students define their own. Also, the course seeks to demonstrate the variety of ethical approaches that rational people use to make moral decisions in this world and develop the abilities to create communities in which people with differing ethical systems may successfully live together. Desired Course Outcomes: By the end of the semester, you will be able to: A. Critically examine your own belief system B. Critically examine other belief systems C. Develop strategies for accommodating and cooperating with others who share differing belief systems D. Think, read, and write critically about ethics Course Requirements: This course uses a variety of different criteria for measuring course performance: Class Participation (10%): Students are expected to attend class regularly and to participate in course activities and discussions. Students are expected to have prepared the readings prior to class and to be able to discuss them in class. Students are expected to know the dates of upcoming events and to warn the instructor beforehand if there is some foreseeable conflict. Web Participation (10%):
