Carbon Dioxide and Global Warming 1 WHAT ARE GREENHOUSE EFFECTS AND DANGERS OF GLOBAL WARMING Abbigail Hjerpe Carbon Dioxide and Global Warming DeVry University Integrated Science 214 Professor Phillip Thatcher October 19, 2010 What is greenhouse gas? Honestly it is bad for our Earth but it also is a good thing too. Greenhouse gasses make life inhabitable on Earth. A rise in temperature that occurs on Earth is due to the occurrence of certain gasses in the atmosphere (United States Environmental Protective Agency, 2006). Some of these gases in the atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane (United States

Carbon Dioxide and Global Warming 2 Environmental Protective Agency, 2006). Without gasses of these types Earth would be around 60ºF colder. For this reason these gasses are called greenhouse gasses (United States Environmental Protective Agency, 2006). Though it is these same gasses that can make the Earth too warm, and this can cause harm to humans, plants, and animals (United States Environmental Protective Agency, 2006). There is more than one meaning to the greenhouse effect there are natural greenhouse effects and manmade greenhouse effects ( Spencer, R., 2007). The natural greenhouse effects keep the Earth at a habitable temperature. The manmade greenhouse effect comes from burning of fossil fuels ( Spencer, R., 2007). Around 85% of Earth’s natural greenhouse effect comes from water vapor ( Spencer, R., 2007). This is a very strong greenhouse gas ( Spencer, R., 2007). The greenhouse effect is where gasses allow for short wave radiation from the sun to pass through the atmosphere (
