Last Time … We talked about English phonotactics. What are they for? On our quest for possible phonological words in English, we started out with 75 billion possible English syllables. With 9 phonotactic rules, We narrowed our search down to 870,000,000.

Phonotactic Rule # 10: Rule #10: The glides /w/ and /j/ cannot occur in a coda position. One might think that the words cow /kaw/ and lie /laj / have glides in the coda. However, this is not correct. The off-glide is a part of the diphthong / aw/ and /aj/.

Complex Codas Similar to complex onsets, there are rules governing complex codas. Complex codas have more than 1 consonant. For example, send /s ɛ nd /, texts /tɛ ksts /.

Two-Consonant Codas The 1 st consonant can be anything except the glottal fricative /h/ (which doesn’t occur in codas at all). The 2 nd consonant cannot be / ŋ/, /ɹ/, /ð/ or /ʒ/. There are no English words barng /bʌɹ ŋ / and flabr /flʌb ɹ /.

Rule # 11: The 2 nd consonant in a two- consonant coda cannot be / ŋ/, /ɹ/, /ð/ or /ʒ/. These sounds are also disallowed
