Name : Jennifer Patterson Date : 5/02/2011 Exp 11: Determination of Water Hardness Lab Section : 7426 Data Tables: Part 3: Titration of water with unknown hardness EDTA used Initial EDTA reading Final EDTA reading Volume of EDTA used Trial 1 9.2 7.5 1.7 Trial 2 7.5 5.8 1.7 Trial 3 5.8 4.25 1.55 Trial 4 Average volume of EDTA solution _1.65___ Part 4: Calculate the hardness of the unknown sample Hardness of the unknown sample _165_ mg/L Conclusion: The objectives of this experiment were to develop familiarity with the concept of hardness of water, to practice a titration technique using a titrator, and to determine the hardness of my local water supply. In this experiment we tested the total hardness combining the Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ions in the water sample and reported as Ca 2+ per liter, whereas the water treatment plants would test for both but would be reported as mg/L Calcium Carbonate instead of combining them. We tested for these 2 ions by using EDTA (ethylenediamene tetraacetic acid).
