HEALTH POLICY ANALYSIS2On November 20, 2019, Katie Porter, the U.S representative for the 45th Congressional District of California, proposed the Students Mental Health Rights Act to protect the students who struggle with the challenge of mental health (House.gov, 2019). The policy is meant to ensure that college health policies are in line with the federal guidelines in place. The motivation to propose this policy came from the fact that many students with mental health problems have todeal with burdensome college policies. The act will ensure that such students are encouraged to seek the help they need to help them in succeeding. It is meant to ensure that universities and college comply with the federal guidelines that they should not have policies that are discriminative against students based on their mental health challenges, which will likely lead to better policies in the universities and colleges to support such students. Across the country, there is an increase in the numbers of students who experience anxiety and depression. According to Mucarsel-Powel (FL-26), 60% of students experience overwhelming anxiety, and 40% experience serious depression. However, a very small percentage seeks help because of stigma and fear.
