Ashlee Sisson February 25 th , 2011 ENGL302: Poetry Portfolio Essay As an English major and someone who never had trouble when it came to writing, I was a bit intimidated by English 302 when I was told we would have to write in only free verse. Little did I know, I would actually learn to hate rhyming and love free verse writing in just 7 weeks. The first poem, the portrait poem, was the easiest to write for me. I enjoyed writing about my father and his military experience, especially through an object. As a free verse poem I felt that I was able to say everything I wanted to and describe the way I felt as a young girl without being overly sentimental. I also enjoyed writing about someone as close to me as my father, but through something else.
