Functions of Management 2 Functions of Management Any organization in the world no matter how large or small requires proper management skills to function properly and yield long term profits. Management is described as “ The process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals.” (Bateman & Snell, 2009). There are several functions in management but the most important ones include (1) Planning, (2) Organizing, (3) Leading, and (4) Controlling. Planning is a formal intent of managing tasks assigned and gathering all the required information. Poor planning leads to chaos and hardships in any given task. In the Marines every single task is always properly planned to the lowest level and then executed. If this approach is not taken then there can be substantial collateral damage and lives can be lost. Tasks in the Marine Corps have direct impact not only on the individual but also the team members. Proper planning in the Marine Corps has come along way. In the past Marine Corps leaders did not go through extensive planning and strategic operations training but now the new leaders in the Corps are required to go through detailed planning and organizational training schools, so they
