BUSX460 PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Syllabus and Schedule Summer 2011 Vietnam COURSE DESCRIPTION To apply your business knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs) through professional responsibilities in employment, internship, service learning or comparable experience. This class brings together business knowledge, skills, and attitudes in a work-based seminar setting. Course Prerequisites Completion of 90 credits, including 18 CBE upper-level credits: BUSX (CBEC) 301, FIN 331, MNGT 361, and MKTG 341. Required Readings: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Dr. Stephen R. Covey and selected handouts, websites and discussion groups from the instructor Course Purpose and Objectives BUSX 460 integrates practical work experience with a directed, reflective, academic component to help you develop personal, professional and academic competencies. You will use the workplace as a starting point for study; however, you will need to go beyond the common experiences of an employee. Study, critical thinking, reflection, and theoretical and/or conceptual exploration supplement your work experience, through seven seminars, to help you develop workplace knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSA’s). A primary and fundamental objective of the course is to help you develop the competency of self-directed learning. This will likely be a very different learning experience than what you have encountered thus far in your educational career. This course will require substantial self-directed discipline since you will be managing your own learning experience. If you do your job well, you will be better prepared for the workplace. In summary, after this course, you should be able to : 1. Use the Stephen Covey 7 Habits of Highly Effective People as an initial framework for self-assessment of your own performance and your strengths and weaknesses. 2. Use disciplined reflection to learn from the challenges of the work experience. 3. Identify and work with a mentor to learn in the work environment. 4. Apply problem solving and project management techniques to the practical requirements of the work place. 5. Develop and strengthen a skill foundation essential to work effectively in the work place (Refer to the KSA’s in the CBE Profile of a Graduate). 6. Identify career goals and develop steps toward achieving those goals. Seminar Format Learning happens through mixing theory and practice, reflection and action, observation and interaction.
