CheckPoint: Characteristics of Orientalism, Prejudice, and Discrimination The difference between Muslims and Arabs is simply the difference of culture versus religion. Arab is a culture. It includes countries that have an Arab culture, such as the United Arab Emirate. An Arab is from an Arab country or one with an Arab ancestry. Muslim is a religion which follows Islam. Muslims can come from any country. Within the past 2 years, there have been a few changes to policies in the United States that concern the treatment of Muslim and Arabic Members of society. In an article by Ghazali (2008) it was stated that the FBI can now open an investigation based upon race and ethnicity. The new policy would also allow the FBI to ask open-ended questions and research activities and employment about Arab-Americans and Muslim- Americans. This new policy transforms the current "innocent until proven guilty" style of treating suspects into "guilty until proven innocent".

Unformatted text preview: According to the text in chapter 11, Orientalism is the " simplistic view of the people and history of the Orient, with no recognition of change over time or the diversity within its many cultures" (pg 284, paragraph 5). Characteristics of Orientalism include using a broad generalization rather than focusing on a single country and religious extremism. There are many things that can be done to promote tolerance and reduce prejudice in different towns and cities. I believe that the biggest step that one can take is to teach one's children about tolerance towards other religions and cultures. It is also important that people understand their own racist beliefs and try to challenge them. References Ghazali, A. S. (2008). American muslims alarmed at the new profiling policy.
