University of Asia and the Pacific BIOLOGY, August 24, 2010 ACTIVITY 4 DISSECTION OF THE PIG’S HEART Lance Oliver B. Cordoba 1-K ABSTRACT This importance of this activity is to familiarize oneself with the important of the parts and functions of the heart and some disorders that are also connected to the circulatory system, this activity involves identifying the different parts of the heart, which also includes the passages of the heart and its uses/functions. INTRODUCTION The heart is the key organ in the circulatory system. As a hallow, muscular pump, its main function is to propel blood throughout the body. The heart beats from 60-100 times per minute, but can go faster when it needs to. The heart is a muscular organ which is found in all living organisms. The heart weighs between 200 to 425 grams and is a comparable to the size of your fist. By the end of a long life, a person's heart may have beat, it is also responsible for the circulation of blood. The right side of the heart collects de-oxygenated blood from the body into the right atrium and then via the right ventricle pumps it into the lungs so that carbon dioxide can be dropped off and oxygen picked up. The left side of the heart collects oxygenated blood from the lungs into the left atrium. From the left atrium the blood moves to the left ventricle which pumps it

out to supply oxygen to the body. The reason why we used the Pig’s heart in this activity, because the pig’s heart is very similar and has the same function and parts. Heart attacks are by far the most common disorder in our heart and it occurs due to blockages in the arteries that supply the heart blood. Aneurisms are also a type of a heart disorder wherein the artery dilates and the most common location of this disorder is in the abdominal aorta; this disorder is also known as the abdominal aortic aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS MATERIALS - Pig’s heart, dissecting pan, dissecting kit PROCEDURES: A. External Anatomy 1.
