Digestive System What happens to food when it is eaten? The body uses various kinds of food for energy and growth by Digestion Digestive System It is when food us converted into nutrients that can be carried through the bloodstream and absorbed by the organism’s cell The organ system that includes the gastrointestinal tract (GI) also called as the digestive tract , alimentary canal, or gut, and its accessory organs. Processes food intro molecules that can be absorbed and utilized by the cells of the body. Principal Parts of the Digestive System 1) Mouth the first part of the digestive tract Food is masticated (chewed) by the teeth, moistened by the saliva, and rolled by the tongue. The inside of the mouth is lubricated with saliva that comes from the salivary glands. The strongest muscles are found in each side of the mouth. They help move the lower jaw and give it a biting force. 4 Types of teeth in the mouth: a. Incisors – used in cutting food b. Canines – used for grasping, piercing and tearing c. Premolars and Molars – used for crushing and grinding 2) Pharynx A funnel-shaped opening which is the continuation of the mouth 3) Esophagus or Gullet A muscular tube that can open and close the pharynx or throat. It can also open and close the stomach The walls of the esophagus consist of smooth muscles. The wavelike movement of these muscles, called peristalsis, pushes the food down to the stomach. 4) Cardiac Opening or Orifice Relaxes to allow the food to pass through, and then closes again. 5) Stomach Large muscular storage; can hold about a liter. Functions in storage, mixing and some secretions

As food is liquefied in the stomach, it is slowly released into the small intestine for further processing. This is where chemical and enzymatic digestion starts. There are natural chemicals in your stomach that we call digestive juices. They are acids that dissolve food down into smaller pieces so it can be absorbed into the blood stream. About half-an hour after food has been eaten, the stomach begins to discharge its contents, now reduced to a thin, gruel-like (chyme) through the pylorus 6) Pylorus The exit of the stomach, consisting of a band of muscular fibers which relaxes from time to tome to allow food to pass into the small intestine 7) Small Intestine About 20 to 22 feet (6.1 to 6.7 meters) long and about 1 ½ to 2 inches (3.8 to 5.1cm) in diameter. It is where the vast majority of digestion and absorption of food takes place Its wall are made up of smooth muscles The inner lining of the small intestines is folded into tiny fingerlike projections called villi 3 Parts of the Small Intestine a.) Duodenum
