Source 1 Title and Citation: Native American Casinos Indian Gaming benefits Native Americans 1 Identify the principal issue presented by the source. Economics Resource Group claims that Indian gaming has had a positive impact on American Indian communities by reducing unemployment and increasing revenues to tribal governments. 2 Identify any examples of bias presented by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. I do not detect bias because the author does present evidence for both sides. 3 Identify any areas that are vague or ambiguous. If none exist, explain how you determined this. There are no vague or ambiguous areas. To determine vagueness ask yourself are their any areas that are unclear to you? To determine ambiguous areas ask yourself does this have two or more possible meanings. 4 Do you find the source credible? Explain your reasoning. I do find this source credible because they provide statistics and references that I would consider expertise in that field. 5 Identify and name any rhetorical devices used by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. I did not recognize any rhetorical devices. The author did not try to get an emotional response from is audience. 6 Identify and name any fallacies used by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. All statements were supported with evidence. Fallacies are statements that are not supported with evidence. 7 State one argument made by the author. Self-determinations has been a key success to reservation development 8 Identify the premises and conclusion of the argument. Premise: Economics Resource Group maintains that Indian gaming has positively impacted American Indian communities by reducing unemployment and increasing revenues to tribal governments. Conclusion: Economics Resource Group concludes that, on the whole, tribes that have opened casinos are better off than they were before the spread of Indian CRT 205

casinos. 9 Is the author’s argument valid or invalid, sound or unsound, strong or weak? Explain how you determined this. I believe the premises are true therefore the conclusion is also true making it a valid argument. I believe this is a sound argument as well. Since the argument is strong and all the premises are true it is a cogent argument.
