THE LETTERS TO THE 7CHURCHES
In looking at the letters to the 7 Churches, we see the Lord speaking directlyto the 7
Churches that existed in the Holy land at the time John lived. We alsosee the Lord's opinion
of those Churches, and what they were doing at thetime.
Untothe angel of the church of
write; These things saith he
thatholds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks in the midst of the sevengolden
I know thy works, and thy labor, and thy patience, and how thou canst not
bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them whichsay they are apostles, and are not,
and hast found them liars: 3
And hastborne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast
labored, and hast notfainted. 4
Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou
hastleft thy first love. 5
Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, andrepent, and
do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and willremove thy candlestick out
of his place, except thou repent. 6
But thisthou hast, that thou hates the deeds of the
Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto
the churches; To him that over comes will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in
themidst of the paradise of God.
We see a church distracted, or strayed from its original calling, and the
Lord'sadmonition to return to that call. I speculate that the Church in Ephesus wasexpanding
quickly, and probably getting caught up in the details of becoming alarge church, rather than
attending to its evangelistic ministry that it startedout with.
Andunto the angel of the church in
write; These things saith
thefirst and the last, which was dead, and is alive; 9
I know thy works, andtribulation, and
poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of themwhich say they are Jews, and
are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. 10
Fearnone of those things which thou shall
suffer: behold, the devil shall cast someof you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall
have tribulation tendays: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that over
comes shall not be hurt of the second death.
