Angie Mason Organic Chem Lab 3100 – Sarah Burroughs October 22, 2010 Homework – Wilcox and Wilcox, p 68-68 #1,2,4,9,10,11 1. a) Define boiling point in terms of vapor pressure. It is the point at which the pressure of the gases above a liquid (the vapor pressure) measured in mmHg is equal to the surrounding atmospheric pressure. This equilibrium point is the boiling point. b) What is the effect of a reduction in external pressure on the boiling point? Lowers the boiling point. 2. What effect on the temperature of a boiling liquid and on its distillation temperature is produced by each of the following? (a) A soluble, nonvolatile impurity? It would cause the mixture to boil at higher temperature and increase the distillation temperature . (b) An insoluble, admixed substance such as sand or fragments of wood or cork. Would help to initiate vaporization, but would not affect the boiling temperature or distillation temperature . 4.
