CMN102 notes Chapter 1-Human Inquiry and Science Objective: -examine how people learn about their world -look at mistakes -what makes science different from other ways of knowing Most of what you know is a matter of agreement and belief. Little of it is based on personal experience and discorery. Process of learning to accept what everybody around you “knows” is so. If you don’t know those same thiings, you can’t really be a part of the roup (fitting in) Most of what oyu know is a matter of believing what you’ve been told. Basis of knowledge is agreement. You know things thru tradition, others from “experts”. Other ways of knowing things: You can know things thru direct experience-thru observation -When your experience conflicts with what everyone else knows, there’s a good chance you’ll surrender your experience in favor of the agreement -“Are worms really good or really bad to eat?” Looking for reality Knowledge from Agreement Reality -SCIENCE - which offers an approach to bother agreement reality and experimental reality - scientists have criteria - an assertion must have both logical and empirical support - must make sense and it must NOT contradict actual observation Agreement reality= you agree because it makes sense (match criteria), even if you have NOT personally experienced it - Those things we “know” as part and parcel of the culture we share with
