Tiara Collins Sommers RWS100 November 27, 2009 The War on Capitalism Capitalism is “an economic system in which investment in and ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange of wealth is made and maintained chiefly by private individuals or corporations, esp. as contrasted to cooperatively or state-owned means of wealth.” In Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story he argues that capitalism is bad. He does this by demonstrating it as a system of greed, exploitation, and “taking and giving, mostly taking.” From the first moment the video starts with the spokesman warning that the video is very controversial, the bank robberies, and Dog Eat Dog Films , Michael Moore effectively reveals the corrupt nature of capitalism and its negative effects on American society. Michael Moore first begins building his argument by claiming that capitalism is “a system of taking and giving, mostly taking.” On February 9, 2009, in Lexington, North Carolina, there is a family staying in a home, which is about to be invaded by police officers. The young lady and daughter of the homeowner is shooting a home video of the entire encounter, also, there are recordings from the outside of the home where the police officers are attempting to break in. As the officers roughhouse the door, the fear can be heard in the young lady's voice and seen in the video, by the young lady's shaking hands grasping the camera. The officers pound in through the back door into the families home. Through the young lady's home video, Michael Moore uses shot type and is able to demonstrate an example of how America uses capitalism to take and steal what belongs to its citizens, and what they have worked hard for. This is effective because the viewer is experiencing the incident with the family through the young lady's home video, allowing them to feel the anger of someone

taking what belongs to them, but the fear and defeat of something that was once yours is no longer. Michael Moore continues to build this claim by showing two other evictions in Detroit, Michigan and Peoria, Illinois. In Detroit, Michigan, a man that has lived in the house since he was a young boy, is being boarded up and all their furniture thrown into the dumpster. “This is helping society by putting people on the streets?” one woman screams at the men that is taking her home, and leaving her and her family to find shelter in the streets. In Peoria, IL, although they have no where to go, a family must move from their farm within the next 30 days. One of the homeowners, reminisces
