Hispanic American Diversity Cuban Americans are third in population in the United States among Hispanic Americans; Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans have higher populations. Of the total population of Cuban Americans, approximately 55% of them reside in the vicinity of Miami, Florida (Schaefer, 2006). According to Pew Hispanic Center (2006), “Compared with the rest of the Hispanic population in the United States, Cubans are older, have a higher level of education, higher median household income and higher rate of home ownership” (para. 1). Although many can speak English very well, over half of the Cuban American population speaks Spanish in its homes. Because many Cuban Americans consider themselves “white” and consider America as their homeland, they are more socially accepted than any other Hispanic group. Twenty-eight percent of Cuban Americans consider themselves Republicans, 20% claim they are Democrats, and 27% say they are Independents (Pew Hispanic Center, 2006). Much like other Hispanic groups, Cuban Americans are loyal to their families and are predominantly of Catholic religious backgrounds. Pue rto Ricans have been migrating to the United States and becoming citizens since they became a protectorate of the United States. Puerto RicanAmericans, seem to migrate to New York. Puerto Rican Americans, have a higherstance on education. Many Puerto Rican Americans seek a higher degree ineducation, and higher lifestyles than many of their fellow Latino Americans. Almostall Puerto Rican Americans are strict Roman Catholics, few are from other religions,but mainly they believe in the word of Roman Catholics.
