110 A MIDTERM REVIEW PROBLEMS SPRING 2008 I am not the one writing the midterm, so these problems may not be representa- tive of the exam. They are probably harder than exam problems would be. There are hints on the second page, if you need them. It is probably best to try the problems first without the hints. 1 (a) Figure out how to use image charges to find the potential inside a hollow, grounded conducting sphere, with a charge q placed somewhere inside it. (b) Two concentric, grounded conducting spheres have radii a, c , and a charge q is a distance b from the origin, with a < b < c . Draw a picture of the situation with appropriate image charges. (c) For the setup of part (b), assume that a c , and find the potential in the region between the spheres. You may drop terms of order a 2 c 2 or higher. Do not assume that either a b or b c is small. 2 Two long thin wires of radius a are held a distance d apart. Find the capacitance per unit length. You may assume d a .

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
