2. (1 pt) You were on a date, and the bill came to $42.60. You thought the service was fair
and so you gave a 15% tip. How much money did you leave for the tip?
Solution:
First, note that 10% of $42.60 is $4.26.
Second, note that 5% of $42.60 is $4.26
2 = $2.13 Hence, 15% of $42.60 is $4.26 + $2.13 = $6.39
3. (1 pt) Determine whether the following statement makes sense or not.
(a) I’ve decreased my caloric intake 125%, which has helped me lose weight.
Does not make sense. You cannot lower caloric intake below 100%.

4. (1 pt) Convert the following numbers into Scientific Notation.
(a) 6300000000 = 6.3 × 109

5. (1 pt) The number of daily newspapers in the United States was 2000 in 1900 and 1500
in 2000. Find the relative change. (Please put the fraction in lowest terms.)
Solution: The new value (NV) is 1500 and the refrenece value (RV) is 2000. So the relative
change (RC) is: RC = N V −RV
RV = 1500−2000
2000 = −500
2000 = −500
4∗500 = −1
4 Note: Negative ratios are OK, it just means that the number of daily newspapers has
decreased. 1 ...
