The question to answer; or solve, was if there was a father in a store buying cold medicine for his child who recognized some of the brand names were more expensive than the generic although they had the same ingredients, how would I explain the reasons for that to him. Well working in retail for the last 12 years of my life has actually put me in this type of situation multiple times before. A few years ago, I actually would only buy brand names because I figured if they were more expensive they had to be better, right? I have learned that that is not the case. I would tell the father that the reason the brand names are more expensive than the gen eric is

That he would be paying more for the name and the label, and that the generic brands are usually made by the same companies that produce the brand names. I would also let him know that the generic is usually just as good as the brand name. I would encourage the father to buy the generic because it would save him some money. Knowing what I know now I usually always buy the generic brands when there is one available....
