Week 3  Chapters 4 and 5 Chapter 4  Origins of the Concept of Justice 1. List and give a brief description of the four concepts of justice. -1) Fairness 2) Equality 3) Impartiality 4) Appropriate rewards or  punishments 2. Walsh said justice may be “hardwired” in humans.  What does he mean by  that use of phrase? -Walsh meant that justice is a biological adaptive trait and it is a emotional  rather than rational nature. 3. Where did the term “Justice” originate?  Give a brief analysis of Plato’s and  Aristotle’s view of justice. -Justice is a Greek word meaning dike and that everything is assigned a  place or natural role. Plato believed that justice consists of maintain the  societal status quo and is one of four civic virtues: justice, wisdom,  temperance, and courage. Aristotle believed that justice exists in the law and  is the unwritten customs of all or the majority of men which draws a  distinction between what is honorable and what is base. 4. Define rectificatory justice and distributive justice. -Rectificatory justice- concerns business deals where unfair advantage or  undeserved harm has occurred. Justice demands remedies or compensations  to the injured party.  -Distributive justice- concerns what measurement should be used to allocate  society’s resources.
