CHAPTER 4 MECHANICAL SYSTEMS USE FORCES TO TRANSFER ENERGY
4.1 Force Force is a push or pull that acts on an object.
Different type of forces: Contact forces E.g. Friction Action-at-a-distance E.g. Gravity
Contact Forces: The object has to be touched in order for the force to be applied. E.g. hitting a tennis ball Friction: Opposes motion of an object E.g. Ice hockey puck slides on the ice and then stops. The force that stops the puck is called friction
Action-at-a-distance The force can push or pull the object without touching the object also called non-contact forces. E.g. magnetic forces and gravity Gravity: attraction between two objects due to their mass. The amount of gravity between two objects depends on the objects mass and distance between the objects
Mass Vs Weight Mass: the amount of matter in an object Mass of bowling ball is more than tennis ball because it has more matter Unit of measure is kilograms (Kg) and smaller objects measured in grams (g) 1L = 1Kg 1000g = 1Kg So, 1000g = 1L
Mass does not change from gravity force Weight: amount of force on object due to gravity Weight is the same as force of gravity
